Our Initiatives

Since 2012, the Family Literacy Coalition (FLC) has guided B’more for Healthy Babies’ initiatives that focus on the intersection of health and literacy during the age period of 0-3 years.  FLC works hand in hand with partners in the educational and early childhood development sectors to link health and literacy priorities in the crucial first years of a child's life.

In 2014, FLC completed the development of an evidence-based five-year strategy that takes a life-course perspective in considering the inter-relation of health, social and environmental factors that influence child health and development from pregnancy to kindergarten. The strategy works at the policy, service delivery,  community and family levels to:

  • Improve school readiness at kindergarten (includes socio-emotional, behavior and cognitive skills, and physical development) by integrating family literacy interventions into existing partner efforts and expanding best practices;
  • Better coordinate literacy services into a “pipeline” of resources for families from pregnancy to kindergarten; and
  • Identify and address gaps in that pipeline.

The FLC functions as the literacy workgroup for BHB, the literacy committee for the Early Childhood Advisory Council (ECAC), and the school readiness workgroup of the Baltimore Grade Level Reading Campaign (GLR).  Participating partners include:
