In these unprecedented times of social unrest and a global pandemic, our nation and city is at a crossroads. As we reflect on this, we also celebrate the good: this year, 33 more babies celebrated their first birthdays than in years past.
Yet, the loss of even one baby is one too many and in our city, a Black Infant is 2x more likely to die than a White infant. And these disparities are not due to race, they are driven by racism. Just as we yell Black Lives Matter to combat racially motivated violence, we also declare that #LittleBlackLivesMatter. #PreciousPurpleSunday

In Baltimore, Black babies and mothers experience poor birth outcomes more often than any other group and the culprit is racism. Racism, past and present, drive birth disparities by impacting birthing families throughout their lives, including through housing policy, systemic racism, and bias in health care. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Last year, several babies died during sleep. All of these babies were sleeping in a bed or on a couch with an adult or another child. Our hearts go out to these families for their loss, and we want to do everything we can so that no other family goes through this.
